Coordinating between 2 replication jobs of 2 Veeam servers

Post by datnus »

Hello,
We have 1 main site and 1 DR site. Each site has 1 Veeam Server v9.5.
VM A is in main site and to be protected.

In main site, we have a replication job of VM A to file server locally by Veeam server 1.
=> This is for local recovery.

In DR site, we have a replication job of VM A from main site to DR site by Veeam server 2.
=> This is for DR.

These two replication jobs seem locking each other.
Is there any way we can coordinate these two jobs? E.g: To run job 1 after job 2 across 2 different Veeam servers?

I install Veeam Backup Enterprise manager to manage both Veeam servers.
But, it can't coordinate the jobs between different Veeam Servers.

Thanks a lot.

There is no way to directly coordinate jobs with multiple B&R servers.

You can, however, run jobs against the same VMs from multiple B&R servers if you have different schedules that don't overlap.

How frequently are you replicating the VMs?

We replicate every 30 minutes. Each job normally completes in 10 minutes.
We have tried to split the schedule in minutes. However, many times, the jobs keep conflicting.

What is the best practice for local replication and remote replication at the same time?

I might suggest that you use a powershell script in the post-job actions of one replication job to initiate the second replication job (ie have no schedule at all on the "second" job).

I believe there is no replication copy?
Is there any way to copy update from local replica and cooy to DR?

Hi datnus,

Steve is correct that you cannot coordinate two separate jobs from independent backup servers, you need to make sure they don't overlap. On the other hand, can you please clarify why do you need to replicas? Why not to do back up locally and keep backups for FLR restores and run replication jobs from these backups to the DR site for a full VM failover?

If this is not a solution due to already set up infrastructure, you can try to follow Erik's advice.

Let me know if this helps!

As this is the DB VM, we want to "sync" it to DR regularly.
I wonder if we can do incremental backup of the VM every 15 minutes with low performance impact?

It depends on your hardware and how you back up this VM. VM snapshot commit operation may impact the performance (varies in different deployments). What's your current snapshot commit time? You can verify that in the job session log.
