Backup Copy Job not compressing .VBK files

Post by vahsankhan »

Hi all,

I am experiencing a weird issue right now. so we have a DataDomain 2500 that is the storage repository with DDBoost feature enabled. so we are running a backup copy job for archival purposes. all VBK's and VIB's are being compressed by the Veeam and Datadomain but when the Backup Copy job runs to make a Weekly backup as per configured policy the .VBK is not compressed.

Only Backup Copy Jobs .VBK files are not getting compressed.
Also have opened a support ticket for this but could a get satisfactory response.

Case #02082436

To fully understand the issue, could you please share the backup copy job settings and the way you're telling the backup files are not compressed? Also please note that it is recommended to store backups on deduplication storage uncompressed (for better deduplication), so even if compression is enabled in the job itself, the repository might be configured to decompress data prior to writing it to the storage (default setting).

Compressed size for .VBK files shows "0" whereas for .VIB file it shows "198.15".
I just don't know why .VBK files are not being compressed . this is happening for all Backup Copy job.
Normal Backup jobs .VBK files are getting compressed although.

I guess those compression metrics are DD ones, not Veeam. So I'd ask EMC about that.

I don't know what's to be expected, but I think I'm seeing something similar with my DD-VE.

Code: Select all

/data/col1/veeam/Copy Win-AD-EX to DD/martonvm1.vm-40D2017-03-16T010000.vib: mtime: 1489645145478057000 fileid: 35608 size: 3033530368 type: 9 seg_bytes: 3665983158 seg_count: 402946 redun_seg_count: 326333 (81%) pre_lc_size: 655228202 post_lc_size: 170272406 (26%) mode: 02000100777
/data/col1/veeam/Copy Win-AD-EX to DD/martonvm1.vm-40D2017-03-10T010000.vbk: mtime: 1489645862432107000 fileid: 35719 size: 537598775808 type: 9 seg_bytes: 736936164180 seg_count: 24566263 redun_seg_count: 24566263 (100%) pre_lc_size: 0 post_lc_size: 0 (0%) mode: 02000100777
I'm assuming the % for post_lc_size is what % the file is compressed? I agree--open a ticket with EMC.
