Running off production VM replica, need to remove snapshots

Post by VirtualDL »

Hello All

I'm currently in a situation that has me running a production VM from it's replica. Everything is working correctly on the VM, but the snapshots remain. The replica was started manually on the new host and the original VM and host are no longer available. Is it safe to manually delete these snapshots? Relatively new to Veeam and don't want to have the VM fail forcing me to restore from disk images. Reading the articles in Veeam support don't seem to offer a clear answer (or perhaps I am misunderstanding something). Any help would be appreciated. Veeam 9.5 with ESXi host 6.0 U2. If any other info is needed, I'll do my best to supply it.

Hello and welcome to the community!
Yes, snapshot removal will not affect the VM. You may backup the VM before deleting the snapshot to feel more safe, but again no harm should occur.

Thank you Shestakov for the warm welcome and quick response!

I was fairly sure that I could safely do this as I have done it without problems with other VMs in testing, but this article gave me pause
https://www.veeam.com/kb1987

Do I need to worry about the 2 most recent snapshots still as the article mentions or should it be ok to delete them once all others have been removed?

Hello.

The snapshots reference the retention points from your Veeam replication jobs.

If you open Snapshot Manager > Delete All this will consolidate all the snapshots into your running instance. Be aware this can cause performance degradation whilst it merges the files. It may be prudent to complete this during an approved maintenance window.
