Restore SQL trn files from guest processing

Post by john.wood »

Hi,

I've setup a backup job for MS SQL with guest processing for application aware log shipping every 15mins with truncation.

Enviroment:
Veeam 9.5 U1
SQL 2014
Windows 2012 R2

I've been requested by our DBA's if it is possible to be able to restore the logs as TRN files only and not use the explorer to restore directly to the database.

I've trawled through the event viewer logs to find the location where Veeam puts the logs before taking a backup and removing them, but have not found them in an image backup.
Is there a way to restore the TRN files as a file level restore?

regards,

John.

Hi John,

We store the logs as VLB files on the repository (same repository as where you are saving the image-level backup). As far as I am aware, there is no possibility to extract the log files from there directly besides using the Veeam explorer.

What is the reason that your DBA's don't want to use the Explorer or Enterprise Manager to do the restore?

Because they're DBA's.

No offence to any DBA's that do see the value of using the Explorer or Ent Manager.
They want their cake and to eat it too.

So if I understand correctly, they prefer to do everything through SQL server management studio itself? Or are they using any other tool

Then they need to disable logs processing in Veeam B&R and use SQL Management Studio to backup logs.
