Storage Spaces Direct just vanished from Server 2016 1709
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/10/18 ... es_direct/
Hmm wasn't S2D a recommended solution for Veeam just a few months ago? What now?
[EDIT] After a some more reading, this is just a core version - you wouldn't build a S2D cluster with this.

Where did you read that only core is affected?

You should be using Server Core for things like Hyper-V and S2D. Presumably there is some bug in S2D that needs to be fixed in the new version. It just came out 2 days ago so I would wait for more information from Microsoft to come out before jumping to conclusions.

Looks like it's just out of 1709 and will be back in the next Semi-Annual release https://twitter.com/WSV_GUY/status/921022521821896704

Is it really good practise to leave something out because you've focused in something else?
Why would you ever throw something out if it's stable?

1709 is a very limited release in that it's missing both a GUI and S2D. Personally I doubt it will get any sort of widespread use since there is also no upgrade path to, or from it when using a full GUI. Given that, who wants to deploy something that will have new and different bugs but that is getting only a fraction of normal users actually using it.

Dave is spot on. In essense, 1709 is a SAC release is heavily focused on container technologies, for anything outside of containers you probably want to stick with WS2016 until the next release. By the way, Microsoft has expanded the Release Notes for 1709 with a clarification on S2D situation > https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... 9-relnotes

Is it only 1709 that has deduplication on ReFS?

That is correct. You can still use 1709 for other scenarios without S2D, or you can wait for 1803 to come out.

It's a shambles, there's always something in the pipeline, in development, in preview with Server 2016. Its worse than open source....

I don't get it either. I will not ask why, because they have reasons obviously (and some of them i'm probably not aware of), but it makes things complex, that's for sure. I have to make a choice for which BUILD version of a server OS to go for, depending on featureset and update cycle/branch. Simple thinking regarding "latest = greatest" isn't going to cut it anymore.

I agree, their decision is very controversial. I assume they had to choose between the two evils. One thing this will do is paint SAC (semi-annual release channel) as an "advanced beta" channel, so to speak... I didn't think this is what Microsoft wants to happen - but this perception will be hard to change now.

Or a new SKU with Storage Spaces Direct and removal from the regular version of Windows Server.
Just like they do now with Windows 10 Workstation edition.
