VeeamZIP from instant recovery

Or perhaps something else that would fill the gap in our workflow? We are mostly Hyper-V through SCVMM integration, but we do have some vCenter backups as well.

Currently, VMs can be retired by many different people for many different reasons. While we typically get to ask the question "how long do we need to hold onto this" before the source is actually deleted, sometimes we cannot. The backups still exist, but the VM doesn't exist on the source, so we can't just backup copy the backup data.

I've toyed around with different setups but can't seem to come up with a clean way to basically mount the most-recent restore point, create an archive, then dismount the restore point and let our retention policies do their job.

After looking at different options, it seems like the best solution would be
- instant recovery to some backend host
- VeeamZIP (or an on-demand backup job) setting the retention as desired
- tear down instant recovery VM

Seems like it isn't possible to backup an Instant Recovery machine, though. It shows up in the inventory, but VeeamZIP jobs just complete immediately:

Combination of Instant VM Recovery and VeeamZIP should work fine. Can you tell me the exact steps you took? Was it Hyper-V or vSphere VM? Thanks.

Hyper-V through SCVMM. I tried that and the job finished instantly, without processing any data.

To be clear, you don't need to inflate the VM, right? Just instant recovery mounted directly from backup storage should be able to veeamzip?

Yea just tried again and the job finishes without actually processing anything, same as original post.

- bring up instant recovery
- close window when it says "waiting for user action"
- browse to inventory
- expand host with instant recovery VM
- choose veeamzip on the vm
- job starts, says building vm list, then finishes

Ah, unfortunately, for Hyper-V environment the proposed approach does not work due to the way Instant VM Recovery is implement in case of Hyper-V. Thanks.

Is there an alternative approach to VeeamZIP after a VM is deleted from the original Hyper-V host?
