Business View 2.0 features decommission

Post by Shestakov »

Today, many users including myself find Business View groups creation challenging as the feature design became a bit outdated. For that reason we are planning to introduce major changes in Business View in the upcoming releases. This will simplify the group creation process and bring other nice opportunities.

Right now we are considering to turn down some minor features due to unclear use cases and complexity of porting this functionality to the new Business View concept. To make the upgrade procedure smooth to our customers, we would like to know your opinion on the features below.

Do you use any of features listed below?
  • VM templates categorization along with VMs
  • Manual approve of categorization
  • Integration with vSphere Custom Attributes (apart from VM Tags)
Feel free to share your thoughts about other features as well.

Thanks!

Nope, never had cause to implement any of those three features.

Filtering and selection by multiple VMware Tags as AND operator is what we need.

Thanks for your feedback! Can you please provide us with the real life example of the group you want to create? It would be good to check if this can be accomplished with the new Business View engine or not.

In the past we've used VMware Tags to indicate VM location, backup frequency and other attributes.
Combining these would enable us to define a Veeam backup job and Veeam One Protected VMs report purely on tags to cover any VMs matching the criteria.
Then when new VMs are created or moved to a different datacenter they would automatically be included in backups and report success /failure on the appropraite management report.
Hope that makes sense.

Looks like the scenario could be implemented even in current product version.
Or the issue is lack of multiple cardinality support (one VM in several groups of category)?
Thanks!

Could a future release maybe write changes to tags immediately to vCenter? Currently it is only done when the collection interval is reached. Minimum is 1h. Using VeeamONE as a more effective way to manipulate tags it would be great to have the changes available in vCenter right away.

In the direction from vCenter to VeeamONE it has of course to be polled in intervals as vCenter doesn't trigger the transfer.

Thanks,
Mike

Hi Nikita.

I have to pull out this old thread because the question popped up in another project.
Could you please elaborate on your last post here. In which frequency is VeeamONE updating the exported categories/groups into vCenter tags? Immediately when status flips within VeeamONE?
Actually I could not find an exact reference in the "What's new" for 9.5 U4 neither for V10.
I assume it to be the "Business View categorization refresh" taking place more often than the object properies collection. Support just told me it's the latter task still. That would mean still once a day?

Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mdiver,

Currently, both vSphere tags collection from and exporting to vCenter happens as a part of the Object properties collection task. By default, it's once per day, but you may increase the frequency if required on the "Servers" tab of Veeam ONE Reporter.

Business View categorization refresh serves a different need - it enables the business view categories data flow from Veeam ONE Reporter to Veeam ONE Monitor.

Thanks
