Working out timings for Veeam tasks - feature request

Post by jaseruk »

Hi all,

I've been using Veeam for about 2 years now and just worked something out.

When viewing the job details it's seemingly impossible to work out what time a given task starts at, when viewing the details it looks like this, the time on the right is what appears in the "duration" column;

Job started at 30/03/2018 00:00:41
New copy interval started
Building VMs list 00:04
VM size: 90.0 GB
Changed block tracking is enabled
Processing VirtualMachine 01:33:35
VM size: 20.2 GB
Changed block tracking is enabled
Processing VirtualMachine2 01:50

The above entries were copied with a shift select.
And to work out what time the VirtualMachine finished backing up I've been adding 00:00:41 + 1:33:24 = 1:34ish. But it never quite added up.

If however you copy out the lines one at a time you get this;

30/03/2018 00:00:42 :: Job started at 30/03/2018 00:00:41
30/03/2018 00:00:44 :: New copy interval started
30/03/2018 00:00:47 :: Building VMs list
30/03/2018 00:01:27 :: VM size: 90.0 GB
30/03/2018 00:01:27 :: Changed block tracking is enabled
30/03/2018 00:01:27 :: Processing VirtualMachine
30/03/2018 01:29:04 :: VM size: 20.2 GB
30/03/2018 01:29:04 :: Changed block tracking is enabled
30/03/2018 01:29:04 :: Processing VirtualMachine2

A useful timestamp showing what time each action actually started!!

Why on earth is this information not visible in the details view? And why do I have to copy and paste out each individual line to see the time stamp?

Unless I'm missing something here there is no way to make the timestamp when a job started visible on the details view?

Please tell me I'm not the only one to have this frustration and please can we add this to the feature request list?

Thanks!!!

Another example;

Shift copy and paste showing what is displayed on the details views

Waiting for new restore points 87:07:02
Some VMs were not processed during the copy interval
Copy interval has expired
Starting full backup file merge 05:56:57
Required backup infrastructure resources have been assigned 03:20:07
Restore point 02/03/2018 00:00:00 created successfully 05:55:32
Full backup file merge completed successfully
Waiting for the new copy interval 00:00

And the information if I copy each line out individually;

16/04/2018 08:53:48 :: Waiting for new restore points
20/04/2018 00:00:45 :: Some VMs were not processed during the copy interval
20/04/2018 00:00:45 :: Copy interval has expired
20/04/2018 00:00:53 :: Starting full backup file merge
20/04/2018 00:00:55 :: Required backup infrastructure resources have been assigned
20/04/2018 00:02:13 :: Restore point 02/03/2018 00:00:00 created successfully
20/04/2018 05:57:50 :: Full backup file merge completed successfully
20/04/2018 05:57:53 :: Waiting for the new copy interval

How exactly do the times on these;

Starting full backup file merge 05:56:57
Required backup infrastructure resources have been assigned 03:20:07
Restore point 02/03/2018 00:00:00 created successfully 05:55:32

Bear any resemblance to what is actually going on? Are these 3 running concurrently?

Hi Jason, I've just tried to copy multiple records from the job session and they were copied along with the timestamps, just like you quoted above for a single line copy operation. Any chance you're running some older build? Also, information about start/end time of the particular operation is available if you select the VM in the left column.

This is most likely the total time that resource scheduler was in use by all the job tasks (for example, one of the task didn't get resources when the job had started and was waiting until some of the other tasks released the slot).

Hi Foggy,

I manage around 30 Veeam installs all running at least 9.5 U2, and none of them show the time stamp if I copy and paste multiple entries;

Multiple lines;

Removing VM snapshot 00:12
Queued for processing at 13/05/2018 23:12:13
Required backup infrastructure resources have been assigned 00:26
Using Weekly Repo 1 scale-out repository extent

Single copies;

13/05/2018 23:10:56 :: Removing VM snapshot
13/05/2018 23:12:13 :: Queued for processing at 13/05/2018 23:12:13
13/05/2018 23:12:13 :: Required backup infrastructure resources have been assigned
13/05/2018 23:12:40 :: Using Weekly Repo 1 scale-out repository extent

It would be nice if both the start time stamp and the duration were copied out in one go.

It's the same either at the top level list of VMs or on the the individual VMs. I also don't see the start time stamp anywhere on the view;

Seem very strange that this information is available, just not visible.

Are you using CTRL+С or shortcut menu command?

Just tested this.

When I use Ctrl+C I don't get timestamps for any lines - single or multiple.

When I right-click and "Copy to clipboard" I get timestamps.

However I agree with Jason that viewing in the UI would be useful.

It's been requested quite a few times. Seems such a simple thing to implement.

Right now I am answering a backup > copy > replica question from a customer and the best way to explain is to step through each phase with time stamps one at a time to get a true understanding of what Veeam is actually doing.

Can't say I had considered context menu vs ctrl + c, right click + copy on multiple lines does work, which makes life a little better.
