GUEST OS For Veeam Server.

Post by cag »

I have 3 options for the Veam Server Install.
Option 1
SBS 2003 Server 32bit 4GB RAM Phyisical Server. 2 x 3GHZ Xeon Dual core Processors.

Option 2 Windows 7 64bit VM on one of my production Servers. 2 x 2.4GHX Xeon Quad core Processors. 24GB RAM
Additional COST of WIndows 7 64bit OS.

Option 3 Windows 2008 R2 64BIT Server on the same server as Option 2.
Additional COST of WIndows 2008 R2 Server.

Veeam used for Replication only to DR Site for a Total of 3 VM's MS Exchange / MSSQL / File Server.

My Goal is spend no additional money, but not sacrifice realabiliy.

Question how does Veeam compare using 32bit vs 64bit and Windows 7 vs Windows 2008 Server.

Anyone running Veeam backup & Replication on a Windows 7 64BIT OS ?

Hello Conrad,

Using 64-bit version does not provide any significant benefits, but I wouldn't mix backup server and SBS machine because of the performance considerations.

As for the choice between desktop and server platform, I would choose Windows 2008 R2 64BIT Server, though I'm fairly sure Windows 7 64bit VM will also be applicable.

Hope this helps.

Using the 32bit SBS Server should not be a performance issue since it is not used for anything else other than for Veeam. This is a old LIC we have that is not used. I did not what to buy a 2008 64bit / Windows 7 64 bit if it would not help with increased performance.

Thanks..

Then SBS Server should be good to go. Make sure this machine is not starving from CPU resources while running backup/replication jobs.
