Tip - VMWare to Hyper-V migration

Cliff notes - having problems backing up a Hyper-V cluster and you've moved VMs around? Do a re-scan on the cluster IP in backup infrastructure.



I have recently migrated from VMware to Hyper-V and used Double Take Move. It's unfortunate that Microsoft has just released a converter that can do online conversions, but it wasn't available when I started my migration.

I want to share some experience with my migration. Double Take Move has worked well so far, but when it migrates a VM it doesn't put the configuration files and VHDs in the exact spot I would like. It doesn't add the virtual machine to the cluster either. When a VM is migrated and I have the integration tools installed and everything is running OK I will move the VM to the correct spot on my clustered shared volumes and add the VM role to the cluster to make it highly available. During the time when it is only on the Hyper-V host there is a good chance Veeam will back it up, especially if you have your backup server pointed to the cluster IP and not individuals hosts. This is fine and worked ok, but after you move it around and/or add it to the cluster Veeam gets confused. Long story short out of 18 VMs I had 9 warnings, 3 failures, and 3 successes. Yesterday I went into my Veeam backup server, backup infrastructure and did a "re-scan" on the host. All successes!!!! Doing this will update Veeam on the hosts, their volumes, and what's connected to it.

Any migration is scary, but stick with it, it'll work out...

I spent quite a bit of time trying to find a way to migrate VMs from VMware to Hyper-V and say lots of confusing information. The end result for me was that Microsoft's tools couldn't migrate a VM while it was on (online), but I'm pretty sure that has just changed with their most recent release of their converter tools.

MVMC (the Microsoft tool) has been deprecated in favor of Azure migration tools. Grab it now while you can.

MVMC is the on-prem P2V tool that has been out for a couple of years. It is being replaced with an Azure oriented toolset.

Hey Guys
Just wondering if veeam offers any tools to migrate from vsphere to hyper-v. The only way i have managed to do it so far is run final veeam backup, Shutdown vm.
restore VMDK File and then use MS conversion tool , to convert the vmdk to vhd. Just wondering if anyone can suggest a better method.

Nope, we don't provide any cross-platform migration means.

An option might be to install the agent into the VM and back it up like it's a physical server, then export the disk(s) out to the other hypervisor's disk format. Probably not officially supported, but it's an option.

did anyone know a way to convert Hyper-V VMs to VMware VMs with Veeam 9.5 ? I will create a backup from the Hyper-V machines and then restore the VM as a VMware VM. Is this possible with Veeam 9.5 ?

I dont think this is possible due to the alliance partnerships with both VMware and Microsoft.

You can backup the Hyper-V VM with Windows Agent for Windows and restore to a VMDK format. You can then create a virtual machine pointing to this VMDK

it's possibile to perform a replica with Veeam B&R of Hyper-v VM to Vmware vSphere hosts?
We have 2 datacenter, the first (in HQ) based on Hyper-v 2008 R2, the second (in a branch office) based on Vmware vSphere.
It's possile to replicate the vm from the first datacenter to the second via Veeam B&R?

This is currently not possible within Veeam Backup & Replication.

I am looking to migrate some VM's from VMware to Hyper-V and I was thinking maybe there is a way with the latest and greatest Veeam to do this.

I believe that you can perform an agent-based backup of a VMware VM and restore it to a hyper-v host. but I just want to confirm this or is there a case or if there is a different / better way?

Is it safe to assume that in v11 we can now use the Instant Recovery method for this type of migration and just use the standard (non-Agent-based) Veeam backup for vSphere?

I already tested and really works, local agent backup and recovery on any platform (vmware and hyper-v).
But to execute that through command line (powershell snappin), I found only available to vmware, and also works like a charm.
Is that correct? We don't have this same commando to execute ComputerInstantRecover to hyper-v?

vmware command:
Start-VBRViComputerInstantRecovery -RestorePoint $restorepoint[1] -Server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Yes, this is correct. We have the cmdlet for hyper-v in plans, but the request's priority would depend on people's demand.
Now it's pretty low.
