Bidirectional WAN Acceleration

Post by lowlander »

Hi,

We have two sites. On each site we have a physical server with WAN accelerator configured. When defining a copy job on each site (copy the backup to the second site repository), the job of site B has to wait until site A is finished.

Is there a tweak to use both WAN accelerators in parallel, and what would be a good alternative ?

thanks !

I'd say it should be able to process both directions in parallel, so recommend opening a case to take a closer look at what happens. The only limitation here is that WAN accelerator acting as a source one can only process one task at a time, but should be able to process other tasks assigned to it within a job that uses it as a target accelerator.

I'd also try to tweak the limit of maximum concurrent tasks on both repositories as well as read/write data rates limit.

[MERGED] Bidirectional Veeam WAN Accelerator

Post by falkob »

Hello community !

I have a question regarding Veeam WAN Accelerators.

Let's assume the following situation:

- 2 physical Datacenters (name it "DC1" and "DC2"
- 2 physical Proxies (name it "PRX1" and "PRX2"
- both proxies have direct attached SAN Storage configured as an SOBR each (name it "SOBR1" and "SOBR2")
- 1 vCenter Server with ESX Hosts in DC1 and DC2
- Backup Jobs back up data from DC1 to SOBR1 and from DC2 to SOBR2

The aim is to copy the Backup Data from SOBR1 to SOBR2 and from SOBR2 to SOBR1

If i install the WAN Accelerator role on PRX1 and PRX2, am i able to process Veeam Copy Jobs bidirectional and parallel ?
In fact is it possible that both Jobs can be run parallel, while :
- PRX1 copies to SOBR2 (Source WAN Accelerator: PRX1 | Target WAN Accelerator: PRX2)
- PRX2 copies to SOBR1 (Source WAN Accelerator: PRX2 | Target WAN Accelerator: PRX1)

Thank you very much !

Yes, it is, just make sure that given WAN Accelerators are sized in accordance with system requirements (you need to double the specifications given there). Thanks!

Ok, then i'll be curious about it.
Because today i tested it the following way:

- Backed up a VM on SOBR1
- Backed up a VM on SOBR2

Then i created a copy job which, copies from SOBR1 to SOBR2 -> Source WAN Accelerator was PRX1 and Target WAN Accelerator was PRX2.
The Backup Copy Job started to create the global cache etc.

After that i created another coby job, which copies from SOBR2 to SOBR1 -> Source WAN Accelerator was PRX2 and Target WAN Accelerator was PRX1.

This job in fact, showed the message: "Ressource not ready: WAN Accelerator"

Thank you !

Checked it with QA team, unfortunately, I've provided you with outdated information - it was possible, but in previous versions of VB&R. This is not the case any longer - the ability to run source and target WAN Accelerators on the same machine in parallel has been blocked due to issues it caused.

So, currently to achieve your goal (run two backup copy jobs in parallel) you need to have a pair of WAN Accelerators at each site.

Thanks!

Hi v.Eremin,

okay so i'll have to setup a Target and Source WAN Accelerator on each site.
Thank you so far for this information.
