Health Check for Backup Files

Post by pronto »

Hi Community,

last Friday a backup job was run for the first time that had the 'performe backup file health check' feature enabled and scheduled. According to the Knwoledge Base article 'Health Check for Backup Files' [1] the last restore point should be checked during this job. In the manual you can read that several backup files have to be analyzed, over which the restore point is distributed. This can take a long time. In our case this may have taken only a few seconds, because according to the log entry in the report for this backup job, the whole process, including the incremental backup, took only about 3 minutes. There is also no entry in the report that indicates that the health check was succesfully executed.

Is it to be expected that this health check is not listed anywhere, if it was successful and can it be, with a rather small server, that this health check is executed in almost zero time? To imagine this, the full backup file is approximately 20 GB and 25 incremental files, each about half a gigabyte in size. The backup type used is 'Forever Forward Incremental Backup'.

Hi Tom, there should be an indication of a health check running in the job session. If you do not see it, then most likely it didn't run. I recommend asking support to look closer at your job configuration and log files if required. Thanks!

Hi Foggy,

to complete the thread: I called the support and they were very friendly. It's already in the backup job log but not in the report but in the statistics and I didn't know that you can view older stats with the arrow keys. Going back to last Friday, there is also an entry 'Backup files health check has been completed' and why this went so fast, there is also an explanation for it. The job isn't so old that the full backup file has been merged before and that's why it's still quite fast but this will change over time if the full backup file has been merged several times.

Thx & Bye Tom

Glad you've nailed it. In addition to the engineer's answer, health check performance is mostly defined by the backup size and by what the storage can provide in terms of the read speed.
