Basic Questions

Post by mattrgee »

Hi all,

I have some basic questions and struggled to find answers to them on the Veeam web site. All of the below relates to ESXi.

Does a virtual machine have to be shutdown to take a backup of the vmware files using Veeam?

What type of destinations can the backups be sent to? SAN, DAS, NAS?

Thanks.

Hello,

No, of course VM does not need to be shutdown. We fully support hot backups and in fact we have best implementation of Windows VSS integration as it comes to hot backups of VMs running transactionally-sensitive applications like DC and Exchange.

You can use virtually any destination, the only requirement is that your storage device needs to either:
- Be directly attached to Veeam Backup server, or
- Be connected to any Linux server (directly or via NFS mount), or
- Be connected to any ESXi server as a storage device (directly or via NFS mount), or
- Have ability to represent itself as CIFS (Windows) share on the network.

Thank you.
