Veeam does a rescan of the whole Bucket instead of only the folder configured with the SOBR
Hello Team,
Recently, while working on an issue with Veeam backup offload to AWS we understood from the assigned engineer, that Veeam behavior is to
Rescan the whole cloud bucket, instead of scanning only the dedicated folder in the bucket, that is added as a Capacity Tier to a SOBR.
We have a client that is managing his AWS buckets on his own and provides us with the necessary information to set them up in Veeam.
We have explained the behavior of Veeam, when a rescan of the capacity tier and the recommendation to have a dedicated bucket per SOBR.
This was not acceptable by the customer. They said they have a bucket per country and do not want to create a dedicated bucket per each site in the different countries (WW).
Which actually indeed, makes sense. Having slightly less than a hundred different sites would cause our customer to create the equal number of buckets to manage.
Thus, we would like to raise a request for changing the way a rescan of a bucket is performed by Veeam.
The desire is to have a rescan only of the dedicated folder, that is configured in the SOBR, within a bucket and not the whole bucket itself.
Any additional details needed will be gladly provided.
Thank you in advance for taking the proposal into consideration.
Kind regards,
Nikolay Kolev

Hello Veremin,
Thanks for the warm welcome.
So far I was only on the reading side
No actual necessity to post something, until now.
Yes, of course, the ticket number we were working on is #05774499.
Please note that the discovery about the bucket rescan was a "side effect". The ticket was opened for another AWS related issue.
During its troubleshooting, we had to perform multiple rescan operations that were taking unexpectedly long time.
Thank you!
Kind regards,
Nikolay Kolev

A backup server should only rescan objects within its backup repository folder - or only objects with the special prefix (folder name).
We will double-check the ticket to see whether there was a misunderstanding or product misbehavior.
I will try to update the topic next week with the outcome of our investigation.
Thanks and have a good weekend!

We've reviewed the provided ticket and confirmed that certain misunderstandings happened - the rescan command enumerates (lists) objects only within the backup repository folder. Thanks!

Hello Vladimir,
Thanks for the verification of the ticket and the feedback.
So it was a misunderstanding with the technician who was working on our case and Veeam is rescanning the files only within its defined folder.
Thanks.
Kind regards,
Nikolay Kolev
