Veeam 11.0.0.837 P20210525 and HPE Ultrium SCSI - 8 Issue

Post by tranbywa »

Hi,

I have a brand new HPE Ultrium Tape drive LTO-8 SAS Drive (Q6Q68A) and a Tape Autoloader HPE MSL 1/8 Gs 0-Drive (R1R75A)

I am using Veeam v11.0.0837 P202010525 to backup the contents of a SCSI Lun link to a QNAP NAS, where my backups go.
The backups to the SCSCI LUN work fine, but after setting up one successful backup of the NAS to Media Pool 1, I have been unable to succesfully backup a new set of tapes to Media Pool 2.

The errors I get are:

3/05/2023 8:56:58 AM :: Loading tape TC009AL5 from Slot 1 to Drive 1 (Server: 10.0.1.16, Library: HP 1x8 G2 AUTOLDR 5.90, Drive ID: Tape0) Error: Failed to call RPC function 'LoadMedium': The operation completed successfully. DeviceIoControl(ChangerGetElementStatus) with sourceAddress = '0', destAddress = '0', symLink = '\\.\Changer0'.

3/05/2023 8:58:16 AM :: Processing finished with errors at 3/05/2023 8:58:16 AM

3/05/2023 8:58:16 AM :: [10.0.1.16] [TapeService] Failed to LoadTapeToDrive
Failed to call RPC function 'LoadMedium': The operation completed successfully. DeviceIoControl(ChangerGetElementStatus) with sourceAddress = '0', destAddress = '0', symLink = '\\.\Changer0'.
The operation completed successfully.

In this sequence.

I have HPE looking at this, and they tell me because of changes, my contract does not have an SAID, so I cannot register and obtain updates.

Help!

Hello

Thanks for the case number.
First you should update your Veeam server to latest V11a build or V12. Your build number has two critical security issues and there were a lot of optimizations for all our features in the last 2 years.
You can find the latest build here:
https://www.veeam.com/kb2680

More information about the critical security issues:
- March 2022:

- March 2023:

Like Fabian said, update immediately to the latest build or upgrade to v12.

Regarding your issue. Is it possible that you've tried to load a LTO-5 tape to your LTO-8 drive?

The Veeam Case No is: 06026063

Hi, is it possible to upgrade from the version I am on to 12 with no intermediate steps? (the security updates)?

Also, when I look at the drive, the eject button is greyed out, and it shows 0b as the capacity for the drive, and Media Pool 2 tapes have zero capacity?

How would I tell if there was an LTO-5 tape in the drive, as I am remote. What utilities are there for working on the drive, as the HPE L&TT utility tells me virtually nothing.

Thank you

Your log mentions the tape TC009AL5 which looks like a LTO-5. The LTO-8 drive cannot read a LTO-5 tape so maybe that's causing the error.
Take a look at the inventory in the web management of your autoloader. You should see the tape names and type there. If those are LTO-5 then you need different tapes.
