Please help - Nas Synology File share backup
Hi.
Case #06089695
We need some help on creating file share backups (located on NAS Synology).
Veeam B&R version 11.
Issues:
SNAPSHOT VISIBILITY
1. Since we want to cover locked files we need to work with snapshots. The first issue that we are having is that NAS SYNOLOGY must have snapshot visibility enabled otherwise Veeam File Share Backup job does not work.
From security perspecitve this is an issue.
For example if there is a shared folder: \\NAS-SYNOLOGY\HOME which contains folders of each user with their private data.
If snapshot visibility would be enabled that would give access users to be able to read content from snapshot from other users.
Source: https://kb.synology.com/en-sg/DSM/help/ ... ?version=7
Note:
Users do not have the write permission for any snapshot copies.
Users have the read permission of the snapshot copy only if, at the time when the snapshot is taken, their user accounts have been created and they have been granted the read permission of the shared folder.
WORKING WITH SNAPSHOTS ALWAYS CREATES FULL FILES AND NOT DELTA
2. So if snapshots are enabled on NAS Synology side, and if they are scheduled to run on daily basis, after Veeam FIle Share Backup takes that shared folder it always takes all the snapshots, meaning "full backups" each day. How to achieve Veeam File share backup to work with NAS SYNOLOGY FILE share to work in "delta changes mode", 1 backup + only delta changes the next days.
Just to mention at the end, that this customer had Socket license, and just recently we had advise them that they need to go from SOCKET licensing to VUL licensing model if they wish to have Synology File Share covered. Now this customer is going to literally "kill us" if they found they've switched to VUL and they cannot achieve NAS SYNOLOGY file share backups with Veeam :/ :/ :/
Please advise.
Thank you, with best regards

Hi Bostjan
I saw, that you came to a conclusion in your support case.
Do you have any additional question?

Re: Please help - Nas Synology File share backup
Hi.
I have additional question.
In File share backup job we wanted to add secondary repository which is repository with rotated drives, but job returns an error: “Unable to perform backup to a repository with the rotated drives option enabled.”
Is it possible that this will be doable with upgrading Veeam V11 to V12, because on this article (https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... repository
) it's written that you can use Repositories with rotated drives as secondary repositories.

Hi Bostjan
I apologize for the late answer. I was out of office in the last 3 weeks.
Veeam Backup & Replication v12 is required for rotated disk repositories with NAS backup jobs. It was not possible previously.
Best,
Fabian

Hi.
This was resolved with customer creating backups on Synology level, then Veeam backuped those files as file share backup.
