Best ( most secure ) options for QNAP Storage

Post by NorthGuard »

I have been noodling around with using QNAP NAS devices as backup storage.

My initial implementations used QuObjects for Immutable Storage ( s3-compatible ), but after having initial success over about a 2 month period have begun running into random issues. Mostly things like "bucket doesn't exist" or "can't delete multiple files." I have had 2 tickets open for a couple of weeks now and no real progress is being made.

To at least get successful backups, I implemented a NFS share, moved the repo to that, and reconfigured the backups.

I had an idea that maybe I could spin up a linux vm on the QNAP, point it to a NFS share, and configure immutability that way ( using a Linux hardened repo )... but you can't use a nfs share for that.

So now I am circling back to where I started:
Without buying another device, what is the most secure ( and reliable ) implementation for QNAP storage with Veeam? Should I just stick with NFS storage?

The easiest way is a nfs repository and activate snapshots. Maybe performance is crap.
If you are brave: linux vm and xfs volune on virtual hdd.

I was just playing around a bit more and landed on a possible option, though I am not sure how reliable/safe/stable it would be:

- Install virtualized Ubuntu Server on Qnap
- Configure iSCSI on QNAP and map LUN to storage on QNAP
- Connect Ubuntu Server to QNAP via iSCSI and format that mapped LUN with XFS
- Add to Veeam as hardened repo

Thoughts?
