What is the impact of changing hostname of Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 server?

Post by brucquat »

Hello,

We have to change the hostname of the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 server.
What could be the impact in the
- Veeam database
- Veeam licenses
- O365 authentication (modern app-only authentication is used)

Does it exist any document explaining how to proceed with an hostname modification for the Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365 server?

Many Thanks
Regards,

Hi brucquat

If you want to change the FQDN of a VB365 Server, you have to reset it's entire configuration.
You find this steps at the end of this KB Article (Option 2):
https://www.veeam.com/kb4296

You won't loose any data and you don't have to run new full backups.
Add the same backup repositories and recreate all backup jobs to use the same backup repositories as before.

Thanks

Many thanks for your quick reply.
In the option 2 point 5: Open the Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 console and re-add the Organization(s), Repositories, and Backup Jobs.

So better is, before stopping the Veeam services, to retrieve (manually) the Veeam Backup for M365 configuration as we need to add Organization, repo & jobs?
Thanks

Yes, you should write down your configuration of the organizations, repositories and backup jobs.
This will make it easier for you to recreate anything from scratch.
You can reuse the already deployed Azure Apps and SSL Certs in your Store.

Is this for a service provider environment?

Thanks Mildur. No, it is not for a service provider environment.
We have to change the hostname to follow new strict naming convention

Ok. good.

I just wanted to ask to get an idea on how many organizations you have to re-add.
If it's for 1-2 M365 tenant, then it should not take to long to recreate anything.

FYI I wrote a tool to modify the hostnames in config.edb after a move/rename, so might not have to re-add all the jobs as you can just copoy the config over and update it: https://github.com/platima/veeam-host-rename-or-move/

Hello CWKeith

Thanks for sharing.

Please note, we don't support this type of manipulation of the configuration database.
Changing the hostname in the configuration database could break the encrypted "application registration information" inside the database.
If there is any technical issue related to this change, our support team will not be able to help.

Best,
