What to use for Veeam B&R 12 physical storage devices

Post by AlanW »

I am currently using three Dell EqualLogic SANs for the main backup target for all my sites. I need to replace all of them. I have one Veeam B & R server and I have Veeam proxy at each location. So, three proxies total. All of these are VMs running on VMware 7 and soon to be VMware 8. I also have backups going to AWS with capacity tier jobs.

I am trying to find out what is good for physical storage for all three locations. I was thinking of a JBOD but not sure how to connect that to a B&R VM. I was also thinking a NAS but in one of these forms someone said Veeam would never recommend a NAS.

Hi Alan

If you want to have maximum of protection, then go with a hardware server with local disks and use it as a hardened repository server.
This will allow you to write immutable backups. Connecting the backup storage directly to a VM running on your production environment would work as well. But it doesn't provide you with the same protection against attackers. Therefore we recommend against using a virtual repository on your production environment.

1) Buy a physical server with local disks
2) Install Ubuntu or any other supported linux
3) Add your Linux server as a hardened repository to the backup server:
https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120
4) Disable SSH and any other remote access to the Linux server

Hi,

We've been really happy with Synology NAS as iSCSI targets formatted with ReFS. We have about 500TB over 2 sites on them. You can get dual controller units now too.
