[Proxmox] VM backup with PCI passthrough

Post by EpicLPer »

Hi,

I tried backing up a VM with PCI passthrough but got the following error:

Code: Select all

Failed to perform backup: Failed to back up the disk
Veeam B&R tries to do a backup of the disk, starts transferring them, but later on stops with the above error. The console even shows data being transferred and the speed at which it did so.
Via the Proxmox Backup Server it's possible to do a backup of such VMs, as far as I know Veeam tries to create a Snapshot of the VM first which of course fails due to passthrough being enabled.

Is there any way to still back up such VMs? Or would I have to use the dedicated Veeam Agent to back those up?

Thanks!

Hi,

What's the device that is passed through? Is it a disk or something else?

Thanks!

Hi, it's a GPU passed through to a Windows 11 VM.

Now I got an even weirder error

Code: Select all

kvm: -device vfio-pci,host=0000:01:00.0,id=hostpci0,bus=ich9-pcie-port-1,addr=0x0: vfio 0000:01:00.0: failed to open /dev/vfio/1: No such file or directory

Where do you see it? On the host, or in the job session log?

Thanks!

That failure message was sent to me via mail after retrying 4 times, according to the Proxmox log Veeam B&R tried to restart the helper VM 4 times before failing and sending me this output log, each time with the same message above.
