Veeam require add tape every job backup to tape starting

Post by mailcuatui102 »

Hi all,

I have a job backup to tape backup type disk to disk to tape.
i have 1 media pool with 1 Tape Cartridge.
I have 1 job backup to tape (job B) will start when job backup A completed (job B). When job A completed, Job backup B start but the job will be pending at the tape waiting step until i mark the Tape Cartridge as free then the job can continue running. it always is like that, how can i automate this add tape and mediapool step without having to do it manually? Thanks All.

Hi Dambui,

Can you share screenshots perhaps of your media pool settings? Specifically the section on media set creation, as I suspect what you have set here is closing the previous media set on each run.

Similarly, do you have the option to add tapes from Free media pool checked or unchecked?

Got it, thank you for those Dambui.

Looks like you have it set to "Create a new media set for every backup session".

I'd ask if you can read our FAQ on Tapes as it explains a bit about Media Sets and how they affect the Tape jobs.

In short, right now you have the media pool configured to start a new media set on each run of the job, and you only have 1 tape in the media pool without the option to allow the media pool to take tapes from the Free Media Pool. A new media set always starts with a free tape, so with your current settings, the behavior will be:

1. Tape job starts
2. Backups are queued for tape out
3. Because "Create new media set for every backup session" is set, the previous media set is closed (tape is not usable until Expired, Marked as Free, or Erased), and a new media set is opened
4. New media set must start on an empty, free tape available to the media pool
5. Because you only have one tape in the media pool and the media set for it gets closed, and because you enabled "Never overwrite data", the media pool has no free tapes to use and it cannot overwrite the old tape as the old tape will never expire.

Can you explain your intended tape-out strategy a bit more? If you want to continue using the tape, use the Media Set creation option "Do not create, always continue" so the previous media set does not close.

Hi david.domask,
About the recording mode i want that as following example backup for job A:
job A will save backup data to tape according to the days of the week and by separate hours like: tape for Monday at 8:00 will only save job A backups on Monday, similarly Tuesday at 8:00 will be another separate tape that will save job A backups on Tuesday, and similarly for the remaining days of the week, and when the tape is full then use the next tape to record data and keep 30 copies.
can you give me advice to implement the above request. Thanks .

Got it, thank you for the explanation on your desired tape-out strategy.

Since you appear to plan to have a specific tape for each day, you will want to use the strategy explained in our Tape FAQ here -- check the last Q and A for the Tape section, it explains how to set up a schema for a specific tape for specific days.
