Best Practice Application-Aware Settings for AD Domain Controllers

Post by tomHPN »

Hi all,

Looking for clarification on the advanced application-aware processing settings used for an AD Domain Controller. My specific question is whether under VSS Settings, the transaction log processing should be set to "Process transaction logs" or "Perform copy only".

Processing transaction logs specifically calls out Exchange and Microsoft SQL as examples. This if for server whose only role is Active Directory (doesn't have a SQL Server running). Does AD still need to process transaction logs if it's a DC only or does that not come into play at all?

Asking because I have a DC that is hitting the VSS freeze timeout, and the job is completing with warnings. As a test, I kept App Aware on but set the VSS settings to "Perform copy only (let another app use transaction logs)" and it completed without freezing in the timeout, and the Active Directory Veeam Explorer worked for the test restore point as well - but I might be misunderstanding how transaction log processing works when it comes to Active Directory, or if it even does at all.

Docs, best practice site, and other forum posts were inconclusive.

Hope someone can clear this up. Thanks :)

Hello and Welcome to Veeam R&D Forums!

There is no transaction log processing for Active Directory, it is relevant only to Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and PostgreSQL. There is no need to select 'Perform copy only' either, as this is necessary only for Microsoft SQL Server if you want to process transaction logs using another application.

Thanks!
