Restore Debian 12 VM into GCP

Post by univeris »

We are currently facing issues restoring a Debian 12 VM into Google Cloud Platform (GCP) using Veeam. The restore process fails because Google no longer supports the legacy disk import method for Debian 12. Instead, GCP has shifted to using “Migrate to Virtual Machines” (Migrate to VM) for image/VM-based imports, which does support Debian 12.

At present, Veeam's restore-to-GCP workflow still relies on the older disk import method, making it incompatible with current GCP capabilities for Debian 12.

Issue Details:
  • Debian 12 restore attempts via Veeam → GCP fail due to deprecated disk import path.
  • GCP documentation confirms that only Migrate to VM is actively supported for newer OS versions like Debian 12.
  • Other operating systems (e.g., Debian 11, RHEL, Windows Server, Ubuntu) continue to restore successfully.
Related Support Tickets:
  • #07192311
  • #07474705
  • #07728035
Veeam Support has confirmed the issue but advised that feature requests must be raised via this forum :o , which seems a bit disconnected from the support process. It would be great if this feedback could also be routed internally to the product and leadership teams for better integration between support insights and roadmap planning.

Request:
We are requesting that the restore-to-GCP workflow in Veeam be updated to support the Migrate to VM process, enabling compatibility with Debian 12 and other future OS releases.

Hello, and welcome to the Veeam forums!

Actually, the best process for feature requests is to pass them to your Veeam sales representative. Sales leaders have the ability to log feature requests directly in our R&D tracking system, and they can also attach relevant account/opportunity details.

Of course we in R&D also read the forum  , and I can add your request myself this time. However please ask your Veeam rep to attach other relevant info to the request. FYI the ID for your request is PRT-954.

Regarding the new feature (support for "Migrate to VM" method during restore) - it can only be added after our upcoming Veeam Data Platform v13.0.1 release - this is a major undertaking for all products, and all features are already developed and in final testing.

So your feature has been added to tracking, it's now under consideration for the next feature update for VB Google. If you have any more details please post them here. Thanks!

Hi Alec,

Thank you for the clarification and for taking the time to log the feature request PRT-954, much appreciated.

I wanted to share a quick note on the process: in this case, I was actually directed by our Veeam sales representative to open a support ticket for this feature request. The support team then advised that feature requests must be submitted via the forum, which led me here.

So it seems there may have been a bit of misalignment in guidance between Sales and Support, which I’m sure is unintentional but worth surfacing for awareness. Having a consistent channel for feature requests would definitely help avoid confusion in the future.

That said, I’m glad the request has been logged, and I appreciate your help moving it forward. If additional context or use-case details would help strengthen the case, I’m happy to provide them.

Thank you,
Alec King

Hi, you are welcome! However I do have a query about your scenario - you are restoring using Veeam Backup & Replication (on-premises)? Or are you using Veeam Backup for Google Cloud (the cloud appliance)?

If you are not using the VB for Google appliance, your request might be for the core Veeam Backup team, not this forum (don't worry, we can move your post)

Regarding the logging of feature requests - my understanding is that they should NOT be raised as support tickets - nor should they be posted here. Please let your Veeam sales rep know to have them logged in PRT by their manager. If they have any questions you can direct them to me on internal channels.

Anyway if you can just confirm the exact restore process you are using, we will get your request directed appropriately. Thanks!

Hi Alec,

We use Veeam Backup & Replication (On-premises)

And thank you, I'll let our Sales rep know to update PRT-954.
