backup off-site - veeam vs rsync vs qnap rtrr

Post by Fizzer »

Hi All,
I am looking to implement Veeam at a satellite site with ~25 users. At the same time we are doing a vmware host and storage refresh. We're looking at top end Nas boxes from Qnap, Thecus and Synology.
All of these devices provide Rsync, the Qnap also provides RTRR (real time remote replication)
We'd like to replicate Veeam backups to our site in the UK over a vpn (we have a 1GB link)
The remote site has only got a 10MB link, we would like to use the most bandwidth efficient method of replication we can.
What's the best tool to use for transport over the VPN?

a) Use Veeam to backup directly to the remote site (as well as local backups)
b) Backup only locally with Veeam and use Rsync/rtrr to replicate data to the remote site.

Thanks
Andy

Since version 6 is already optimized to off-site backups out of box via offsite backup repositories, I would suggest to use the first approach.

(a) is MUCH more traffic efficient due to full backup processing performed locally on the target site. And amount of traffic directly affects backup performance on slow links.

We backup about 30 VMs from the US to the UK and have had mixed results. In previous versions of Veeam we ended up storing the data locally and then using rsync to copy across. With version 6 we are getting good performance directly to a repository in the UK. We have a 100mb QinQ layer 2 link between the sites, so your results may vary with slower access speeds.

We are a Veeam partner so we had a good deal of support in fine tuning it. Details of the service are at http://www.stratogen.com/products/vmware-hosting.html

I don't think Veeam likes backing up over high latency networks like this but version 6 is a great improvement and it works for us.
