Any disavantages to running a high replica count?

Are their any disadvantages to keeping a large amount of replicas? Say, hourly replication with a 24 replica retention policy? Does anything run slow or start to cause issues with this many? I'm wondering because I see there is a hard limit of 28, that has to be there for a reason.

With VMware replica points are stored as VMware snapshots (you can see the points right in the vSphere client). VMware has a hard limit of 32 snapshots, and we set our limit slightly lower than this because we need some helper snapshots during the process. Long snapshot chains certainly have a performance impact when you run off of the replicas, and require a longer time to consolidate if you have to stay running of the replica for a long time.
