Permanent Failover Scenario

Post by myrdin »

Hi,

The goal is basically to move a server from one physical host to another minimizing the time needed for the operation (i want to avoid V2V), and i would like to leverage the feature of permanent failover. I dont understand thou if Veeam will actually power off the source and power on the destination. This is what i have in mind:

- i have 2 physical servers.

- 1 vm is currently on server 1 and replicated succesfully to server 2 through Veeam 7

- turn off the vm on server 1

- trigger a replica while the vm is off on server 1 to server 2

- permanent failover to the server 2

- power up of the VM on server 2

sounds good? what happen to the old vm on server 1?Does Veeam delete it?

cheers

Hi Nick,

Yes, your plan looks good to me. Please keep in mind, that Veeam will not delete your source VM, you will have to do that manually after you power it off and replicate final changes to the new server.

As an alternative to replication job, I would also suggest using Quick Migration job, that would do all these steps automatically (power off source VM, replicate all changes, and power on new VM).

Here is a link to our help center for further details > http://helpcenter.veeam.com/backup/70/v ... Bmigration

Thanks!
