Post by dsATspace »

Hi,
is it possible to shrink disks at restore ?
Check the used space an add so space so that the disk is not 100% full ...

For example big productive system / litte testsystem

restore VM from productive system to testsystem

Orginal: 500 GB / used 80 GB

If you're talking VM restore you can convert from thick to thin provisioning but we don't support reconfiguring the underlying OS for a smaller disk at restore time...

Yes, you can. And you can leverage Quick Rollback, which helps you to restore the virtual disk even faster.

I had a similar issue where I needed to shrink a 2TB disk to a 500GB disk (350GB used).
Looks like Veeam can only shrink disks of physical systems with Veeam agent installed.

I ended up making a new VM (no operating system) with a new 500GB disk and a copy of the 2TB disk. Booted to WinPE and used ghost to copy Disk to Disk. Ghost allows resizing before the copy starts. Once the copy was done I deleted the 2TB VMDK and ended up with a shrunk clone of the 2TB disk on a 500GB disk.
