Per VM size reporting on tape/storage

Post by vmtech123 »

Is there a way to view the total size a VM is taking up on tape? or storage?

I know I can see per job, but if i want to look at a specific VM, or group of VM's, and see their backup size in different locations how would I go about that?

Hi vmtech123,

Veeam One has the Backups on Tape report (as well as a few others) that should be able to assist. Give it a try and see if that works for you.

I can think of a few approximations with Powershell, for example, polling the backups with Get-VBRBackup and Get-VBRRestorePoint -- since Veeam backups are compressed/deduplicated by default *, you can total up the size of the restore points that got written to tape and know this way how much they're taking.

* Note that if you use a deduplication appliance or appliance where we recommend lowering or disabling the built-in dedupe/compression, the powershell method will not be accurate with the space usage as tape compression will likely reduce the uncompressed backups significantly.

hmmm. I checked that, what happens if my VM's span multiple tapes and have many weekly backups? this shows per tape basically.
I have like 800 pages to sort out as well so the report takes forever.

Could I request a feature to select a VM, multiple VM's or a TAG and generate a report of all backup data in relation to that VM on Tape and or Storage?
