Hi all
We are currently evaluating OLVM to switch probably some of our current VMware infrastructure to it. We have an offsite datacenter, where we have to switch to in a disaster case. With VMware we use the VM Replication feature for that.
Because that don't exist for the RHV/OLVM plugin, i thought we could build something similar through the REST API in that we create the VMs(without disks) and restore the disks in the disaster case.
The problem is that i don't find an endpoint for restoring only the VM disks. Also if I do a request on /api/vmRestorePoints/{id}?format=Entity i got an 500 HTTP Status Code with the Message "Unsupported object platform \"CustomPlatform\"".
I am right with the assumption that there is not a REST API endpoint for restoring VM disks and also no support for RHV/OLVM Plugin. If so, are ther any plans to add these features into the REST API?
What would also work for us if there are plans to add the Replication feature into the RHV/OLVM Plugin.
Thanks for the help

Re: Restore VM Disks on OLVM Cluster
Hello,
Could you provide more details on how this process would differ for you from simply restoring the original VM from a backup to a different cluster destination?
It would be helpful to understand the main focus of the request, as the creation of a VM is usually not a significant part of the restore process, with most of the time being consumed by disk restores.

Re: Restore VM Disks on OLVM Cluster
The main problem is that (at least what I am aware of) if the MAC-Address changes, some VM's especially those with more than one Networkcard wouldn't come up with all Network connections correctly configured.
I didn't see a possibility to clone the MAC-Address during the restore.
Thats why i came up with this solution. Incremental restore would be preferred to reduce downtime, but I am not aware that this is possible on OLVM.
We also had problems in the past with OLVMs own offsite disaster recovery process and that is also the reason why we do not want to use it.
In the end moment, we would need to be able to restore 100+ VMs, so automation is a must. How it's done does not really matter, it should just work reliably and in an error case easy to fix.
As mentioned above in our current VMware Infrastructure we use VM Replicas, but that is not possible with the RHEV/OLVM Plugin.
I hope it's clearer now.
