Access a Windows VSS Snapshot from a Backup
Hello all,
following situation.
Windows VM with versioning (VSS) enabled on Drive D:
Backup with Veeam B&R.
Is it possible to get access to the snapshots via the normal file recovery ?
If I want to view them via the explorer (opened via Veeam) they are not available.
Only when I start the backed up VM do I have normal access to the snapshots.
Greetings

Re: Access a Windows VSS Snapshot from a Backup
Hello and Welcome to our Community Forums!
Maybe I misunderstood the question but the file level restore provides the possibility to browse file system from a specific restore point and recover files, it has no special interaction with VSS snapshots.
Thanks!

Re: Access a Windows VSS Snapshot from a Backup
Thanks.
Maybe i try it again - sorry my english isnt that goo. Thanks to deepl ^^
I think you have already understood it correctly.
I backup my VM at night.
Now, to be backed up during the day for spontaneous deleted files, I use the VSS from Windows.
This allows 64 snapshots by default.
Since I make one every 10 minutes - I am protected for about 1.5 days via the snapshots.
Above that the snapshots are deleted. But I have the complete backup from the night - if I now need a single file I do the file restore.
So far so good.
And I would like to be able to access the snapshots via this file restore - to be able to restore the last current file.
But this way works as I have tested, only if I start the VM as an example with Instan recovery - then I have access to the snapshots again.
And the question is, is this also possible via the file recovery - via which way ever.
Maybe in short: A posibility to restore files in windows snaphots from a veeam Backup without to start the hole VM Backup as new VM.

Re: Access a Windows VSS Snapshot from a Backup
Hi Luckysh0t,
Your request is crystal clear, however technically quite challenging. In-Guest VSS snapshots aren't plain files that can be easily mounted for read, so in order to look them up we will have to pass through OS stack in any shape or form - and your workaround with staging Instant Recovery is 100% valid to solve the case in this matter.
/Cheers!
