How to perform manual backup from client end?

Is there any way to initiate manual backup from client end? (agent and agentless backup)

Hello,
for agentless backups "it depends"..
1) with vSphere self service portal it's possible if you give the permissions to a user
2) with VMware cloud director, it's also possible (there is also a vCD plugin)

for agent-based backup
a) Linux, AIX, Solaris, MAC: yes, just start the backup job on the console (on the machine where the agent is installed)
b) Windows: yes, if "managed by agent" backup jobs are used

Linux team wants to take backup by themselves before OS patching. Can you give detail procedure to initiate backup from Linux servers, please?
