Malware Detection and Guest File Indexing
Hi,
When I want to enable Guest File System Indexing, the Default will exclude some files for windows like Program Files and more.
For Indexing this makes sense, but not for malware check.
My Question:
Will malware check check all files and only excluded are indexed, or do I need to index all that all is checked?
Veeam Agent for Windows centrally deployed: I did not find any index option on Workstations. Did I miss something. In the Backup JOB the menu for File Indexing is missing.
Thanks
Patrick

Re: Malware Detection and Guest File Indexing
Hi, yes these settings apply to both activities. But why do you think they make no sense for malware check? Veeam is looking for attacks on user files, and these are rarely stored in Program Files. Stored there are application files which do not generally carry any value, as when destroyed or encrypted you can just reinstall the app. Thanks

My assumption was, that malware usually tries to hide on places you usually don't look for them. But ok, understood.
What about Central deployed Windows Agent on Desktops and Indexing. Did I miss that option somewhere?

Re: Malware Detection and Guest File Indexing
Hi Patrick
File indexing is part of application aware processing. Which is only available for Agents operating in Server mode. That's why the option is not available in the job wizard when you choose Workstation.
I got confirmation from our agent team that <guest file index scan> is only available on a server agent. We will update the user guide to make this limitation better visible.
Best,
Fabian

Thats really Bad news, we Switched from free Endpoint to licensed as this was mentioned in the comparison on your Website as new feature. Not only User Guide, also Marketing needs to mention this limitation.
Will this Feature come? On Workstations I think its even more important. We dont have Server Endpoints, where Windows Agent is necesarry.

Re: Malware Detection and Guest File Indexing
Unfortunately the Workstation license does not carry advanced features like guest file system indexing. This is exactly what allows us to sell it 3 times cheaper (fewer features => lower support costs).

Re: Malware Detection and Guest File Indexing
Understand, but in small companies we are fine with free Version on Desktop Endpoint too... this was actually the final reason we switched as the value to go licensed grew. So far it honestly had too less Features even though 3 Workstations take up 1 license. anyway, now its done and we wont go back.
So the Feature is not planned either? Probably, you can reconsider.

Re: Malware Detection and Guest File Indexing
Correct, not planned unless we redefine what Workstation edition is and change its pricing according to the new feature set. Or introduce a separate, expanded "Workstation Pro" feature set perhaps.
Current Workstation feature set is aimed to provide bare minimum image-level backup and restore capabilities. Again, the goal was to reduce support costs as much as possible, otherwise it would be simply unprofitable for Veeam to sell this at the current price.
