"Provider Failure" on agent backup

Post by pkelly_sts »

Case #04278267

We have a newly setup Veeam infra (currently running on Eval version whilst sorting licensing) which was going fine after being setup for a couple of days but suddenly started getting this error from one (physical) server in a 5 server backup job. It initially self-resolved on a retry, then the next hourly backup it took more retries to resolve but managed it, now it's failing completely (and immediately).

I've found surprisingly little related to this error, I can't see anything immediately obvious in the jobs nor on the eventless of the server itself. I tried restarting the local Veeam services on the target server but no difference.

Any ideas?

Update on this, it has since completed error free a few times, and errored again a few times so inconsistent.

Hi Paul,

I can see your machine has a 3rd party backup solution custom VSS Provider in place, which might be causing issues with in-guest VSS Snapshots. Are you using two backup solutions in parallel or that is an undeleted leftover "present" from a previous one?

Code: Select all

"CMD: vssadmin list providers"
Also, application event log is swarming with event ID 8193, "Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine ConvertStringSidToSid(S-X-X-XXX...) hr=0x80070539" which indicates VSS issues with some leftover SIDs in Windows registry. Wild online search shows it could be easily fixed...

/Thanks!
