Restoring a machine on a new and different machine

Post by GYBESET »

Hi,

I am currently using veeam (veeam backup and replication v12) to backup a host server machine.

I am doing a full back up of the host machine.

Is it possible to restore this current host machine on a brand new machine with completely different hardware specifications?

If it is, what would be the most efficient way to do so?

Thank you guys, have a nice day.

Hi,

I suppose it's a physical machine? Is it Windows or Linux?

Thanks!

Yes, it is possible. In general the recovery media works just fine even on a different hardware. However, if any problems occur on some specific hardware (network, storage), you can always hook up the missing drivers from the recovery media.

Thanks!

Yes, restore will work fine if the recovery media has the required drivers from the original machine. Storage devices are the usual gotcha. If you're not in a hurry to transfer to new server, you can install Windows on the new server, get it hooked up with Veeam, create the recovery media and then delete from Veeam. That way you'll have the right drivers.
