VBR v13 Software Appliance (Hyper-V) — “Failed update” ghost warning on Dashboard (resolved after next update)

Post by hrai »

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share something I ran into while setting up a new Veeam Backup & Replication v13 Software Appliance VM on Hyper-V (to replace our existing Windows VBR v12 VM), in case it saves someone else a bit of stress.

Last week I deployed the appliance and completed most of the configuration. However, ever since the initial setup, the Overview dashboard kept showing a failed update / warning status even though everything looked fine otherwise. I tried the usual troubleshooting to clear it (re-scanned, retried to update and did multiple reboots), but the warning wouldn’t go away.

Today, a new update became available in the Veeam Updater. After installing it, the dashboard finally went fully green and the “failed update” message disappeared. Btw I had the veeamadmin with root access this time.

So if you’re just setting up a new VBR 13 Software Appliance, don’t freak out if you see what looks like a “ghost” failed update warning on the Overview dashboard right after deployment. In my case, it didn’t clear with reboots or retries, but it did clear after the next update was released and installed. Hope that helps someone! If anyone else has seen the same behavior (or knows the underlying cause), I’d be interested to hear about it.

Hi hrai,

Thanks for sharing your experience and glad you got the VSA deployed and running.

Looks like there was some issue with finalizing the update based on your screenshots but can't tell much more -- while I'm glad that the subsequent update cleared up the board, if it happens again please open a Support Case and let Veeam Support review the cause of the error in the update, as such "ghost" warnings shouldn't happen.

HI David,

Thanks for your reply. A working theory I have is that maybe the initial update didn't work because veeamadmin requires root access, however since the installation is brand new we don't even have the option to select that in Host Management first; like the chicken and the egg conundrum. Anyways that is just a wild guess, but watching that warning was driving me crazy the past week to the point I didn't even bothered setting up the jobs... Btw because v12 and v13 cannot coesist in the backup infrastructure I had to install v13 in those servers so my v12 VBR windows server is now throwing all sorts of errors since it cannot communicate with the other servers. Not a biggie for now, and I will create the new jobs in v13 tomorrow. Since I have 2 months immutability in the v12 server I will need to wait before I can decommission that VM and delete the object storage in Wasabi.
