Veeam not truncating Exchange transaction logs
Hello!
I use the Veeam B&R Community Edition. I backed up an Exchange Server 2019 DAG with two physical server with Veeam Agent. In Exchange environment there are four database (two of active in Exch01, two of active on Exch02). The transaction logs in place a dedicated volume (L:\ drive). I added the DAG to the protection group with the DAG name. I created a backup job, which include this protection group, and the backup mode is "Entire computer", and the application-aware processing is enabled. I configured too the enable syntehtic full backup on Sunday. The backup job run successfully, and inform me after the run that the "Truncating Exchange transaction logs" is success. But when I checked the logs, I noticed that the logs not deleted. Why? What is the wrong?
Thanks.

Re: Veeam not truncating Exchange transaction logs
Hello,
If I'm not mistaken, Exchange truncates logs by marking them as recyclable so I wouldn't expect physical deletion of log files after successful backup. Also, you can check Application event logs and look for Exchange VSS Writer events about successful backup, in general description of event you will see the following phrase: "The database engine has also successfully executed log file truncation procedures for this database.".
Thanks!

Re: Veeam not truncating Exchange transaction logs
Hy PetrM,
I tried the backup for a new database file. There were 1700 transaction log file and after the backup, stayed 230 transaction log file. Is this normal? Why stay only 230 log and not remove all log?
I didn't find the Exchange VSS Writer event in event log.
Thanks.

I'm not sure that all logs must be removed but it seems strange that you don't see events from Exchange VSS Writer in the Application log, let's wait for the results of analysis from our support team.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Veeam not truncating Exchange transaction logs
In an Exhange DAG it's normal that not all logs get truncated as Exchange keeps some of them for replication. So if you see that some logs for all databases get truncated and also have Exchange available to restore in the Veeam Console, then I would say everything's allright.
To be sure you can check the backup Status for your databases via Powershell: get-mailboxdatabase -status
