15x tapes (10TB each), repository is 8TB, best practice?

Post by bledd »

Hi,

I want to have 1 tape per day, the drive can only hold 1 tape, so it's a manual swap. Place is manned 365 days a year.

Currently have Veeam set up with multiple backup copy jobs.

What's the best way to add in this tape drive to the mix.

15x tapes (10TB each), repository is 8TB

I've added the server as a Tape drive in my Tape Infrastructure, currently has a tape in there and says Free (1) in Media Pools.

Is this the correct option?

May I ask what your goal is?
- 1 Full backup per day?
- 1 Full backup per week, daily incremental?
- You say repository is 8 TB. Do you want to write a fullbackup of your entire repository (every single restore point) every day to a tape?

^Yes, we want to write the whole repository to tape each day. Today is day 2, all seemed to work fine last night.

Just need to ID all the tapes and looks like we're off :)

Heya @bledd, just to make sure I get it right, you want to mirror what is on the repository at the time of the tape backup for each run? Or you want to just have a specific tape for each day:time and it should backup whatever is new since the last time the tape job ran?

If I get it right from your configuration, the data only needs to be on tape until the tape rotates back in for use, am I correct?

Just I have a few comments and thoughts on the job configuration, but based on your tape-out goal, it may not be applicable.

Seems to be running fine for us after some tweaking.

What I've not done is created one big media pool with all 14 tapes in it. Edited our primary repository, so it saves 7 days worth of backups. (backup copy job to another shared drive stores more, 14-21 days depending on the job).

Tapes are set to copy the whole primary repository in file backup mode.

This achieves what we want from it. Tapes are named "Day of week - week number - 2AM".

-Tapes are set to overwrite everything on each run
-No need to rely on multiple tapes to restore a backup
-Oldest tape would be 14 days old and therefore contain a backups that are 14-21 days old
-Newest tape would contain backups that are 1-7 days old
