Veeam V9
Hi,
We currently have a simple configuration whereby we run reverse incremental backups with either 5 to 10 restore points.
We also run HP data protector for long term retention (Monthly and yearly) and to deal with individual file restores (generally deleted within the last month)
I would now reorganise all the backups, remove HP data protector and use VEEAM for tape backups as well as long term retention.
Proposed new backup plan
- Backup jobs with upto 30 restore points.
- GFS Backup copy with monthly and yearly retention.
- Backup to tape jobs to a standalone LTO6 drive.(Daily or weekly full to tape for off-site storage)
My initial though was to create forever forward incrementals backup jobs with 30 restore points, combined with GFS copies and a virtual full backup for the tape jobs.
So my question is :-
Would it be better to change the backup mode depending on whether we decide to a full daily or full weekly backup to tape or does it not really make any difference?
ie
daily full backup to tape use a reverse incremental, GFS backup copy and then a tape backup
Weekly full backup to tape use forward incremental, GFS backup copy and then a full virtual backup.
Any advice is greatly appreciated
Regards

Re: Advice for D2D2T backup plan
Hi,
Do you want to copy only full backups to tape or incrementals should also go offsite? Also, have you considered using GFS Tape Job?
If you want to have daily full on tape and you backup mode is forward incremental then you'll need to change it either to forever forward or to reverse incremental as virtual full does not work with forward chains that have intermediate fulls.Would it be better to change the backup mode depending on whether we decide to a full daily

Re: Advice for D2D2T backup plan
Hi,
We were thinking of only copying full backups to tape.
Seems like a good idea to use forever forward backups, with GFS backup copies and then a GFS tape jobs.
Many Thanks for your quick reply.

Since you're after copying only full backups, the source mode doesn't make any difference.Seems like a good idea to use forever forward backups, with GFS backup copies and then a GFS tape jobs.
You can still use reversed incremental mode. Just create two backups to tape jobs - one for daily needs (enable "process latest full backup chain only" in its settings), another for GFS needs, and then you're good to go.
Thanks.
