Amazon VTL Question

Post by PDubbe »

Hello All,

I know when my tapes expire they get placed in the queue to be re-written over again in the next cycle. Is it a good idea to erase that tape to try and keep costs down when using a service such as Amazon?

Thanks in advance for your response,

Philip

Hello Philip and welcome to the community.
Usual answers for such questions are "It depends" and "It`s up to you" since we don`t know the costs, company polices, your experience etc.
I`m just curious if you`ve already purchased the tapes, why not to keep using them? Is VTL price is much bigger than Amazon service price?
Thanks!

Thanks for the reply Shestakov!

We pay per GB that we use with them. So I can create as many virtual tapes as I would like for free but we don't pay until we start storing things on them. So I have multiple expired tapes sitting there with about 1.5TB that could be erased to potentially lower that cost. I am using this in a GFS pool so I don't need any of this info as it is just only weekly information.
