We have two datacenters and use a VTL library at both.
In the event of a total disaster, is it possible to move the tapes to the other datacenter? I don't see how you go about doing this.

In theory you should be able re-connect library from one server to the other and inventory or catalogue already written media. I haven't tried that personally, though.

Hayden,
If tapes are stored in AWS Shelf you can create new VTL and load these tapes to the newly created VTL. Shelf is 'VTL-independent’ entity.
