Backup and Restore to & from tape

Hi everyone,

am a little new to Veeam Backup and most appreciate if someone can tell me if i'm getting everything right.

i am using Veeam 11 on my Host Server a Dell R740 with Hyper-V with 4 VM's together with a Dell External Backup Tape Drive

my 4 VM's as as folllows. DC / FS /Application Server / Veeam Backup Server

I have a Backup Repository created on my Veeam Server
I have Scheduled a Backup to Disk.... the VM's --> Disk which is working fine and whenever i need to restore from the disk, i can check on the Backups --> Disk--> i can choose the specific VM , i want to restore , or the Specific individual Files or Folders

Now my problem starts.
i have also schedule a backup of the "Backup to Disk " to my external tape drive . Working fine .
Now when i want to restore from Tape, i can only do so from Tape to Backup Repository. I cannot choose\do from Tape directly to specific VM, specific File or Folder as i do from Backups -->Disks. This mean is need to Restore ALL to Disk first.

Does this means that i can only restore from Tape to Disk , then from the Disk i can proceed onwards.
If i want to choose specific Folders or Files, i cannot.

Secondly, can Veeam do a direct backup to Tape -->

Correct. We cannot mount a backup file to the mount server from a tape. So the backup file has to be written back to the disk repository before you can do a file level recovery: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110

Direct restore of entire vms is possible: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=110

I recommend using "Per-Machine Backup Files". With "Per-Job Backup Files", you have to copy back the entire VM job to restore single files.

Not entire VMs. Veeam can use a File to Tape Job to backup specific folders or Files to Tape.
VMs Backups first need to go to disk before they go to Tape.
