Backup Sessions - Media Sets
Hi All,
I have been reading through manuals and forum posts around Tape Media sets, there is allot of references to how these media sets work and the term "Backup session" is used when explaining the operation of specific settings for Media Set creation.
Hoping someone can clear the following up, scenario below.
1. If I have multiple Backup jobs linked to one tape job with "Create New Media set for every backup session" set for the Media Pool, will the multiple backup jobs be considered once "Backup session" even if they are not executed (written to tape) at the same time (Streamed together)?
What I mean by not executed at same time is as follows:
4 x Reverse incremental backups jobs linked to one tape job, 2 x backup jobs completed before Tape job schedule starts however other 2 jobs are still executing (locked files)...
First two start to stream to tape while other two are not accessible yet.. Once the remaining two backup jobs complete will they be considered the same backup sessions and append to the existing tapes used? or not?
Hope that makes sense.
Thanks
Bernie.

Re: Backup Sessions - Media Sets
Hi Bernie.
Single backup to tape job run counts as one backup session. Backup to tape job will wait for all tasks (source backup jobs) to complete and append their data to tapes in one media set.

Bernie,
Bear in mind that if you use the ‘create media set for every backup session’ option tapes from previously created media sets (stated with the same backup to tape job) are no longer appendable.

Re: Backup Sessions - Media Sets
Thanks for the response.
The strange thing we are seeing with my example is that it is not appending to tapes that have just been written to on the same backup session.
It is requesting another tape. (or waiting for one to be put in the library) when there is two tape with free capacity that it should be appending to.
Situation bellow
1. 4 x source disk backups assigned to one tape backup job
2. 3 x Source disk backups completed and ready for Tape backup, 1 x Source disk backup just completing still
3. 3 x completed disk backups are streamed to Tape at same time (two tapes, two drives in library... Tape 112 & 113 (example))
4. First 3 disk backups completed backup onto tape, still free capacity (2TB) on tape 112 & 113.
5. final disk backup job now finished for tape backup to start..... Tape job requesting tape to be written to... will not use 112 and 113. waiting for new tape...
Is this normal behavior?
May be worth logging a support call.
Veeam 9 latest patch level.
regards
Bernie.
