backups on tapes still in catalog?
Hi,
we plan to use veeam8 for our backup. Plan is to do incrementals on disk each day, and one synthetic full monthly which will be put on tape.
My question would be: are those tape backups still in the catalog? means: can i search the backups that only exist on tape for guest files?
Thanks in advance
Best,
Tim

Hello Tim,
Backup to tape does not keep the catalogue of the files inside the VMs – only list of the VMs in the backup job. In order to perform a file level recovery you need to pull the VM first to the temporary disk storage.

That's true Dmitry, but if you are indexing your backups and have an Enterprise or Enterprise Plus license, the guest file indexing retention can extend beyond what's on disk, regardless of Tape. So you could still search in Enterprise Manager, you just couldn't restore very quickly.

oh, great, so I need an enterprise license. I was considering it anyway.
Can I configure this "extended" retention time? What happens with the catalog content when a tape backup gets deleted or destroyed?

Index will be removed, once a tape is erased or overwritten. What happens with the catalog content when a tape backup gets deleted or destroyed?
