Barcode Label allocation
Hi All,
working through setting up an MSL2024 (HP tape library, 24 slot) and want to run a GFS routine. However, as on occasion I will need unskilled colleagues to swap tapes over for me when I am on annual leave (I'm a team of 1) I want to give clues in the barcode labels for the purpose:
XXD000 for daily
XXW000 for weekly
XXM000 for monthlys
XXY000 for annual
I don't need Quarterly.
I can see that the software will obviously add its own electronic labels, but how can I ensure each duration of tape is assinged from the right prefix for the barcode label? Or is it simply not possible and I just need to stick to a regular barcode numbering scheme?
Thanks

Re: Barcode Label allocation
So, you want to use tapes with specific barcode label for particular GFS retention. Say, a tape with a letter W in its barcode should be used by weekly media set, etc.? Thanks.

Hi Yes, that's correct. Sorry I didn't explain very well.

Re: Barcode Label allocation
In this case you can either manually distribute tapes present in library among necessary media sets or write a script that will occasionally check names of available medias and place them in this or that GFS media set accordingly. Thanks.

Re: Barcode Label allocation
Hi, thank you. So - I can use a different media set for each retention period but still run the same VMs? Apologies if it's something straightforward but until I know I can do what I need I can't order the library, tapes, labels etc. so can't practice.

Correct, the restore points of the same VMs can be present in different GFS media sets, if that's the question. Thanks.
