Cannot move offline tapes to vault

Post by sasilik »

I have batch of tapes to write weekly and as amount of data varies little then sometimes there is tape or two which remain empty. If I take tapes out of library then all tapes which have data written on them are automatically moved to specified vault but empty tapes go offline and I can't move them to vault anymore. I can move any offline tape which is in some vault to another vault but I can't move tape with location Offline to any vault. Move to vault is grayed out. Why?

Hi. That's by design: You can move only tapes that contain data and that are offline. Vaults are intended to manage offline tapes with backups/files on them.

Kind of missed that when I read it. But can vaults be considered in future to be for all tapes, not just tapes with data? Why does it matter if offline tape has data on it or not. Its offline and I have put it physically on some other location but I can't see on VEEAM where this tape is.

Sorry for the necro, but I just had this issue. I neglected to "Move to Vault" to set the tape location before I executed a "Move to Media Pool" > Free

Now the tapes are stuck in the wrong Location (Vault) with no way to change.

Please consider allowing Vault changes for "Free" media. We need to be able to track the Location of Free media. Alternately, force the Location/Vault value to be blank for Free media; at least that will stop it from containing unchangeable and incorrect information.

Thank you.

Not sure whether I follow you on that - you've moved a free offline media to vault and now want to get it back to free media pool? Thanks!

6 years after and it seems this feature has not been considered. And I am still annoyed that I can't move offline tapes without data to vault so that I can see where it physically is. It's just offline in some undetermined location.

Hello Markko,

Can you please clarify what version are you at? Should be possible to move offline tape to vault / between vaults in latest versions.

If it can be done on v12 then my apologies for writing without researching first. We have v11 with latest updates.

Hello again,

we upgraded at last to Veeam 12.3 and I still don't see the possibility to move Offline tapes to some vault. Their location is Offline and can't be changed. Should I open the case if I want to know if it is possible in some way or it's still not implemented?

Hello Dima,

I opened the case with support, Case #07553804, and the answer was that this feature is not implemented. The same documentation referred before in this topic but for v12 https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=120 states the same as before "You can move only tapes that contain data and that are offline."

Hello Markko,

Indeed there is a current limitation for empty / free tapes, we've noted an improvement request and plan to fix it in the upcoming versions. Thank you for your feedback!
