Do Incremental Tape backups ever remove files?

Post by i2M »

Hi All,

Just a quick question I can't see to find the answer for.

I have a very large archive file repository which we are planning to backup once a week using a files to tape job.

At the moment we only add files to the repository, and nothing is deleted, so we can keep a very small set of tapes and just cycle them through (instead of having a full set of weekly, monthly etc etc)

If we grant access for staff to delete from the repository, will these files also be deleted from tape when our next incremental tape copy job runs?

Hello,
data on tape is deleted according to the retention configured in the media pool

Best regards,
Hannes

Thanks so much Hannes!

Just to confirm, does that mean if we set the media pool retention to "never overwrite data" then the incremental files to tape job will only ever add changed files, and never remove anything already on tape?

quote from the user guide link above ;-)
helpcenter wrote:Never overwrite data. If this option is selected, data on tapes will not be overwritten. If there is not enough tape capacity for the archiving job to complete, Veeam Backup & Replication will pause the job and prompt the backup administrator to add new tapes to the media pool.
