Drive empty even though tape is inserted

Post by RaPa »

Hello dear community,

I have been using the wonderful tool "Veeam Backup and Replication" in the Community Edition on a Windows 2019 server for some time. Currently version 11..0.1.1261, currently 11.0.0.837 with a on a brand new DELL server with a DELL LTO6 drive ("IBM ULTRIUM-HH6"). Driver is the Microsoft driver.

After a manual change, the inserted tape has not been recognized for some time. The tapes were new and used exclusively with the named VEEAM tool and successfully added to a library.

The tape drive is recognized with the ITDT tool (IBM Tape Diagnostic Tool), after opening the device in the tool, for example, the inserted tape can also be rewound, although it is displayed in VEEAM as not inserted.

Only an "Inventory drive" or

Code: Select all

Start-VBRTapeInventory -Library "IBM ULTRIUM-HH6" -Wait
causes the tape to be recognized.

Is there a possibility that the inserted tape will be recognized again by itself?

Best regards from Germany

Hi RaPa and welcome to our forums!

This is correct behavior, a standalone drive (in contrast to a library) cannot read barcodes on tapes so to recognize which tape is inserted it needs to read the tape header which is done by Inventory command. Using powershell is ok but you may do it as well from the VBR GUI: Tape Infrastructure - LIbraries (expand) - select the drive and use 'Inventory drive' command from context menu or ribbon.
