LTO 7 IBM. Windows Server 2008

Post by CBM »

support case : 01902496
Hello,
Allow me to open a new topic for a library problem.
Here is the context:
Veeam Backup V9 Update 2
Server: HP-DL180G6
OS: Windows 2008 SP2
Library: TS3100 - 3573-TL
Drive: IBM LTO HH 7

We replaced the LTO 4 drive with a new drive LTO 7 (The LTO 4 was used by Backup Exec)
We have uninstalled the Symantec Backup Exec software.
We have updated the firmware TS3100 latest version D.60 and drive in G34.
We installed the non_exclusive driver from the IBM website: X64_W08_6252
Unfortunately, the drive does not go back on veeam but yes bookstore

We tried to install a WHQL driver but not better...

Thanks for your help, ideas..

Best regards

Hi CBM,

Did you install the drivers for LTO drive (can see tape drives in Device Manager, only the library itself)?

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
We installed the "Tape drivers and software, Tape device drivers (Windows 64-bit, x86) / BM.Tape.x64_w08_6252 "
THis driver is for Library and drive..
When we launch non_exclusive.exe in CLI. it is proposed to install just library or just drive driver

I do see that on the screenshot of the device manager tape drive is displayed with the question mark. Looks like the drive drivers were not properly installed. Make sure that drivers are for LTO7 device – as far as I know drivers for previous generations are not compatible with 7 generation.

Ok thanks for your return,
I installed the package for tape and drive LTO 7...On the IBM website there is no option for just drive driver
I'am going to look for something on others web sites..

Thanks

It would be nice, if Veeam could release an official tape drive and tape library list, specially since there are no LTO-7 drives mentioned in the unoffical one!

Didi7,

Thanks – good catch. Will update the unofficial list with known LTO7 devices. Regarding official compatibility guide – it’s coming soon.

[MERGED] LTO7 Drive support

Post by Alan_ORiordan »

Has anyone had experience of adding LTO7 into a Windows Server 2008 R2 backup server?

We are upgrading our LTO6 to the LTO7 generation and I had a last minute thought back to when I had to use the MS hotfix to get the LTO6 to work with the native windows Driver:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2619836

I have researched around and found that there is now a hotfix for 2012/R2

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3095711

I found this in experts-exchange:

https://www.experts-exchange.com/questi ... 008r2.html

For those without a subscription it says:

Microsoft is no longer supporting tape for backup. Period. Either the tape hardware vendor provides the drivers or the backup software does. If neither does, you're out of luck.

The LTO driver that you got with the OS would work perfectly but you would have to force the OS to use it by hacking the .inf file with notepad. The actual driver doesn't change from generation to generation.

I will find it difficult/expensive to migrate to a backup server with 2012 R2 after asking our client to spend nearly £10K on two drives and media

Thanks

As you can see, some of our customers has already tried that. Without much success, however. Thanks.

Hi Alan,
Either the tape hardware vendor provides the drivers or the backup software does.
Check with your library (drive) vendor. I bet they have their own version of drivers instead of the Microsoft's default one.
