Erasing tapes

Post by perjonsson1960 »

Folks,

If I do this with a tape...

Unprotect -> Erase -> Mark as Free

...can I then use that tape for a new backup immediately?

Is the corresponding backup automatically deleted from the database when the tape is erased?
And what happens if there were multiple tapes used in that backup? Is the backup deleted from the database when the first tape is erased, or when the last tape is erased?

Kind regards,
PJ

Hello,

There are Short and Long erase options. The first is a quick operation that removes only the header, while the second physically deletes all data written on the tape. In either case, restoring from such a tape will not be possible. I don’t remember exactly how this is handled at the configuration database level, I can check if needed, but I don’t see how this information would be useful to you, as it operates "under the hood" and remains transparent to the user.

To reuse a free tape for another backup, you should move it to the Free media pool.

Thanks!

Yes, move it to the Free Media Pool, as well. I left that out since I thought that maybe "Mark as Free" would move it there automagically, but perhaps not. ;-)

Thanks!
