Feature request: NetApp NDMP support

Post by jveerd1 » 2 people like this post

Since the Veeam NetApp partnership, Veeam B&R v8 integrates very well with NetApp as production storage using storage snapshots. Because we often use NetApp as a backup repository we would like to file a NDMP tape support feature request. A very common configuration is connecting a tape library via Fibre Channel or SCSI to the NetApp to perform NDMP tape backup.

Frankly speaking, we are discussing this feature - so any input ( like personal use cases or end user scenarios and such ) is highly appreciated. Thank you.

I could get use out of this as well. I have a small subset of the 1600+ VM's that I back up that need quarterly backups retained permanently. As we already use NDMP in our NetApp environment, I could leverage our existing hardware configuration to dump those quarterlies to tape.

We also require this feature. We want to backup NetApp-Filers with NDMP directly (FC) to tape-library.
With this feature, Veeam could be our only backupsystem. Otherwise, we need another backup-tool for that.

This feature would be great!
Thanks.

Hi,
are there any plans for NDMP feature? Has Veeam an information sheet about features planned in later versions?
Thanks.

Is there any new info about backing up Netapp Cifs share with Veeam like NDMP or another way?
Most of our Netapp customer use NFS für VMware and CIFS for file services.
CIFS is a main feature for our Netapp customer to buy an Netapp storage.
Most of them use other backup software and not veeam.

Hello Peter,
No updates on this feature, so far. Is it heavily requested by your NetApp customers?

Hi Oliver,

We keep monitoring the demand for this functionality and based on the feedback will consider adding it to the next major updates.

Thanks!

Hi,
is it correct, that new Veeam v9 now supports Backup of NetApp Filer, even if the NetApp isn´t the primary storage for VMware? Can we Backup a standalone NetApp Filer?

Thanks

As mentioned above, the said functionality or more specifically demand for is still being monitored. So, version 9 is not going to have it implemented. Do you have any source what different is stated? Thanks.

Add another person the list of people asking for NDMP support, specifically for backing up NetApp CIFS shares, trying to avoid VM fileservers.

Hi,
backing up NetApp CIFS shares
Have you tried to select a file share as a source in file to tape job?

No I haven't, we do have tape infrastructure at one of our sites but I don't have it set up with Veeam yet, it's still attached to our old commvault system. Is there a way to do a file to disk job with netapp cifs as source?

Alex,
Yup, possible solution would be to run a File to tape job from Veeam B&R server that has access to the said share: it should be possible to select files that reside on the share in the file to tape job source selection.

Dima, none of the attached file shares to the local server are being listed when I try to configure a file to tape job (see attached picture), any suggestions?

Hi Alex,

What if you drill down the Network in "browse for files or folders" dialog?

It does yes

Looks like this worked thanks. I was hoping that there might have been some way to point this file to tape job to a disk target but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Not sure whether I totally follow you on that. Is the usage of UNC path acceptable for you or you're willing to get something different?

My goal was to somehow back up a UNC path (CIFS share) to a disk target (backup repository)

UNC path (CIFS share) to a disk target (backup repository)
Just to clarify, you want to perform a file level backup of the files that reside on the share (NAS) to the regular disk repository, correct?
